Interdental Cleaning

Dentist using Floss & Co on patient

The regular toothbrush is the most effective and important oral hygiene aid for overall prevention. Unfortunately, it is relatively ineffective at removing interdental plaque, and therefore patients need to resort to additional techniques. Interdental cleaning by whatever method is an adjunct to brushing and not an alternative.

Interdental regions present more plaque and gingivitis and are most affected by gum disease.

The quality of evidence to recommend one product over another is poor. however, one thing is for sure - the performance of the product is only as good as the performance of the person holding it.  Often the feature that is lacking is time.

In my experience, string floss still provides the best properties for true prevention interdentally. Beyond that, if some breakdown has occurred and some bone has been lost, interdental brushes and tooth picks can also be indicated. Most of my patients use a variety of gadgets.

Obviously, for your individual oral health needs, it is best to form a tailored solution with the guidance and assistance of your dentist, hygienist or therapist based on your oral health status and your risk profile.
